This was never meant to be a final piece, so I didn't treat it as such going into it. Glue stick and Bristol board is definitely not the weapon of choice for most artists making collage, with good reason. I won't into the gory details of its demise, but it was kind of like having an artistic miscarriage. Now the reference for my painting only exists as this iphone image (furthermore, this was pre-edit of adding a starfish and fixing up the center wave splash.)

I thought, still think, that collage is a good means for me to achieve the ultimate surrealistic end. So often I'll draw from my imagination because the things I envision either don't typically occur in real life or I'll probably never see with my own eyes and therefore cannot obtain the reference images. By creating a collage I have access to an array of visual information and control of the reference image that would eventually be rendered as a drawing or painting. Collage seems to be going the way of analog photography/film with the advent of Photoshop, but that's a little too much control of the image for this project.

Currently I am trying to explore anecdotal behaviors or interactions of humans and animals in order to portray them, as if to create evidence of these rarely documented interactions and bring validity and importance to otherwise unscientific data. While I believe in science (that's a broad term, but in this capacity I'm mostly referring to the sciences of sociobiology, behavior theory and what we perceive of certain species in general), I also believe that many anecdotal accounts are discounted while they very well may be completely true. And if it is said that "Psychologists have found that people are more likely to remember notable examples than typical examples."[1] Well, then I'm sure that whatever account was experienced is just as, if not more "real"... at least to that person.

Alright, regardless: I promise to use good materials going forward and have invested in them for the next pieces.

[1] Gibson, Rhonda and Zillman, Dolf. In February of 2008 I rescued a pit bull mix from Lake County Animal Care & Control who was scheduled to be euthanized. He was plagued with heart worms and internal parasites, which were unable to be treated in the shelter.

In order to save him, I raised over $1,500 by painting pet portraits and selling prints. Today, Zev is a happy and healthy pit bull who is also a therapy dog. He visits schools, hospitals, and various organizations where he acts as an ambassador for his breed.

Since his adoption he has earned the title of "All Around Wonder Dog", has been featured in the news, become really good at fly ball and now has a little sister named Mooshie. I found him in a pet store where he was housed with another dove, a female. He had plucked all of her feathers out. She was so miserable and beat up that I resolved to take one of them home with me.

I paid $65 dollars to take him out of that store so that the female wouldn't have to be picked on anymore and I could hear him sing, which only the boys really do. The red yarn, for me, symbolizes the empathetic relationship I have with my dog, Za. When Za was a puppy she suffered from separation anxiety (according to my mom). Looking back on it, I think it was just her being a puppy, but none-the-less: When I would leave her, she became so desperate and so self destructive/destructive. Her most notable efforts were to successfully push a full sized bed (on frame, with wheels) to a 5½ foot dresser.

On top of the dresser was a bottle of Ibuprofen in a childproof container. Unfortunately, it was not childproof for my furry child. Don't worry though, she was discovered quickly and my mom and I rushed her to the hospital. Za has no lasting consequences.

She managed to tear all the linoleum off of her puppy room floor.

Getting tangled in the blinds while looking out the window. She was so pathetic when I found her. No damage was done, except to the blinds.

Getting a box of Godiva chocolate out of a closet with a closed door. The chocolate was at the top of the closet on a shelf, but somehow, she manipulated the clothing on hangers to knock the chocolates down, after opening the door, of course.

She did that kind of thing again, except with roach traps. She didn't throw-up or have diarrhea, which apparently was supposed to happen, according to poison control.

I never did any of those things (except for maybe eating a whole box of chocolate), but I empathize with her on the abandonment thing.Kristen B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/17396730851782107732noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4327239494183661572.post-26264045008441288312009-11-15T19:37:00.000-08:002011-10-11T18:21:00.019-07:00Watercolor PaintingsVarious watercolors. Unfinished figure drawings of women:

Kristen B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/17396730851782107732noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4327239494183661572.post-3242314467843720892009-09-14T14:03:00.000-07:002011-10-11T18:27:03.843-07:00Fruit BatsLong overdue updates underway, please enjoy the blog. I am trying to collect the pieces, which were up on the website, into one neat, little, digital package.
TA-DA! They will remain here for safe keeping. For instance:

Close-up of "Fruit Bats"- Graphite and charcoal

This was drawn using a page from a National Geographic magazine as reference. I could see the emotion in her face and so the image seemed very human to me, but ironically, nothing about their exchange is humane.

frame was constructed of wire and branches.

This piece was a part of my senior show, "Suppressed Ways of Being" in 2006.
